Visit to AstraZeneca R&D

Last week, a delegation from WARA Robotics visited one of our industrial collaborators, AstraZeneca, at their R&D site in Göteborg for an inside look at their Autonomous Labs initiative.

For a company operating at AstraZeneca’s scale, automation is not simply an ambition, but a fundamental requirement. Maintaining product quality and improving efficiency across complex laboratory workflows both depend on it.

The visit made it clear that automation already plays a meaningful role in AstraZeneca’s daily lab operations. At the same time, significant challenges remain. Strict requirements for precision and reliability, combined with the inherent complexity of dynamic laboratory environments, continue to limit how far automation can be taken.

Some of these challenges are not entirely new to us. In fact, they helped inspire the WARA Robotics Challenge 2024, which was adapted from an AstraZeneca use case in lab automation.

More broadly, these open challenges are exactly what inspire the research conducted at WARA Robotics, where the focus is on bridging the gap between what current automation can achieve and what industrial settings actually require.
